Homegoing services for Kent Byron Johnson, 61, who departed this life on Thursday, April 29, 2010, will be Friday, May 7, at 11 a.m. from Cornerstone Fellowship Church, Cobbs Creek. There will be a viewing prior to the service from 10:30-11 a.m.
Kent was born on May 30, 1948 to Abraham and Mary Frances Johnson in Plainfield, N.J.. He graduated from St. Clare Walker High School in 1965 and from Virginia Union University in 1969. Kent honorably served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity-Gamma Chapter.
For the past 19 years, Kent worked for the Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice 9th Court Service Unit as a senior probation officer in Gloucester.
Kent served the community in a number of capacities. He previously served as president of Middlesex Chapter of NAACP. He also was the basketball coach of the Southside Sentinel in the Middlesex Youth Basketball League for many years.
From 1998-2000, Kent coached the Middlesex High School girls varsity basketball team and served as an assistant coach for the Middlesex High School boys varsity team.
He was preceded in death by his father, Abraham Johnson.
He is survived by his loving wife, Michelle Johnson; two daughters, TaNeesha Johnson of Washington, D.C., and Sarah Johnson of Charlotte, NC; two sons, Byron Johnson of Argentina, and Aaron Johnson of Dekalb, Illinois; his mother, Frances Johnson of Saluda; two brothers, Reynold Johnson (Dottie) of Edgefield, S.C., and Abraham Taylor of Middlesex; three sisters, Deborah Johnson, Pamela Johnson and Dayna Johnson, all of Richmond; mother-in-law Hattie Holland of Erwin, N.C.; three brothers-in-law, Abram Holland (Debra) of Atlanta, Ga., Derrick Holland of Philadelphia, Pa., and John Holland (Carla) of Newark, Del.; two sisters-in-law, Jean Holland of Philadelphia, Pa., and Janie Cox of Fayetteville, N.C.; and a whole host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and a loving church family.
The viewing will be Thursday, May 6, from 1-7 p.m. at White-Tidewater Funeral Home, Jamaica. The family will assemble at the residence at 9:45 a.m. on Friday.
