Joseph N. Stroup

Joseph Nathaniel Stroup, 76, of Hartfield died Friday, August 13, 2010 at his home.

He was born in Beards Fork, W.Va., and was a Peninsula resident for 60 years. He was a residential builder with over 40 years experience and was an Army veteran of the Korean War, having served with the 187 Airborne. Joe was a Master Bonsai Artist and was the founder of Middle Peninsula Bonsai Club, and an avid replica boatbuilder with two works at the Waterman’s Museum, the “F.D. Crockett” and “Michelle Marie.” He was a creative craftsman with a variety of interests in arts and building and also participated in the Big Brother Program.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Nathaniel Stroup and Nell Barbour; brothers, Arthur, Brince and N.D. Stroup; and sisters, Naomi Rogers, Kitty Thaw and Georgia Londeree.

He is survived by his loving wife, Brenda Stroup; his children, Michelle and Dennis Bolan of Citra, Fla..; Cindy and Bill Woolridge of Richmond, and John Triplett of Yorktown; brother, Jimmy Stroup; sister, Betty Phillips; 3 grandchildren, Joe, Renee and Jason; and 4 great-grandchildren, Amber, Tyler, Isabella and Landon.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, August 18, 2010 from 6:30-8 p.m. at Andrews Funeral Home, Gloucester. It was Joe’s wish that his body be donated to medical science. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
