John W. Holmes
John Wesley Holmes was born July 30, 1921, on Healy’s Road in the Locust Hill community of Middlesex County. He died on Friday, August 23, 2013 at Riverside Convalescent Center, Saluda.
He was a waterman who worked the tributaries of the Chesapeake Bay and the waters of Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey and Delaware. His profound love of the Rappahannock River and the Miss Florence was evident when anyone talked with him.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Zachariah and Mary Lee Dudley Holmes; his wife, Florence Vaughn Holmes; sisters, Maggie Holmes Lee, Lettie Ann Holmes Braxton, Estelle Holmes Francis and Dorothy Virginia Holmes; brothers, Solomon, Frank and Joshua; and his boat, Miss Florence.
He leaves to cherish his memory: nieces, Julia Holmes Graham of Saluda, Velme Lee of Plainfield, N.J., Venita Rhoden (Sam) of Carson City, Calif., Mary Braxton Joseph (James) of Chapel Hill, N.C., Herella Pennamon (Willie) of Powder Springs, Ga., Beverly Braxton Cannon (Thomas) of Stroudsburg, Pa., Billie Braxton of Sommerville, N.J., and Hallie Holmes of Saluda; nephews, Jerry Lee (Barbara) of Menifee, Calif., Joshua Holmes Jr. of Fayetteville, N.C., and Elmore W. Holmes of Saluda; as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 31, at Calvary Baptist Church, Saluda. Interment will be in the church cemetery. The viewing will be Friday from noon-4 p.m. at J.K. Redmond Funeral Home, Shacklefords, and 6-8 p.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Mr. Holmes’ memory to Calvary Baptist Church, P.O. Box 350, Saluda, VA 23149.
