James T. Smith
James Tyler “Smitty” Smith, 84, of Mathews passed away Monday, March 22, 2010 at Riverside Walter Reed Hospital, Gloucester.
He was born in Mathews County on Nov. 7, 1925. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was later employed by the Newport News Shipyard and Dry Dock Company, retiring with 31 years of service.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Christine Smith; three daughters, Carolyn Jones, Eleanor Dixon and Nancy Beverley; one son, James G. Smith; three sisters, Violet Payton, Sarah Foster and Adelle Bayton; and three grandchildren, R.J. Jones, Allison Jones, and Cathy Beverley.
A funeral service was held March 27 at Ebenezer Baptist Church, Cobbs Creek, with Rev. Eric Robinson officiating. Burial was in Windsor Memorial Gardens, Dutton.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Ebenezer Baptist Church, Cobbs Creek; or the Mathews Volunteer Rescue Squad.
