Hugh Stockdell III

Hugh Stockdell III, 95, of Hartfield, formerly of Richmond, passed away on Dec. 2, 2008. He spent his last five years in a splendid retirement in the country in Middlesex County at the home of his daughter, Louise Woods.

He was a graduate of the University of Richmond and received his MBA from the Wharton School of Finance at the University of Pennsylvania.

Mr. Stockdell served as a cartographer during WWII, reaching the rank of captain before his discharge in 1947.

He was married to Louise Powell from 1962 until her death in 1986.

He worked for 30 years at Fort Lee in Petersburg where he developed manuals for the U.S. Army.

He was active in the Richmond Republican Party and was a connoisseur of all things Conan Doyle, Shakespeare and Dickens. In his spare time, he studied the generals and campaigns of the U.S. Civil War and challenged himself by unraveling many advanced mathematical equations. He was a man of infinite patience, far reaching kindness and inscrutable accountability.

Mr. Stockdell is survived by his daughter, Louise Woods of Hartfield; and his grandson, Ronald Woods of Takoma Park, Md.

Arrangements by Bristow-Faulkner Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Saluda.
