Helen R. Ray

Helen R. Ray, 90, of Freedom, Maine, and Deltaville, went home to be with our Lord on Sunday, August 26, 2012.

She was born May 30, 1922 in Henrico County, the daughter of Irvin and Martha (Smith) Roberts. After graduating from John Marshall High School, Richmond, she successfully completed a year of art school.

Helen married John K. Ray Sr. on August 29, 1941, and relocated to Manchester, N.H., where she spent her life as a homemaker, raising her four children, enjoying her grandchildren and extended friends and family. For a time, she had her own business of sewing and alterations, and taught sewing classes. She was an active member in the Eastern Star and White Shrine. She and John relocated back to Deltaville in the mid-1980s.

She loved our Lord, and was active in many churches throughout her lifetime. She was given the honor of Elder Emeritus from her church, Philippi Christian Church, in Deltaville, where she was an active member. She taught Sunday school for the adult congregation. Her love of God  was reflected in her beautiful spirit, gentle ways, and strong, calm, quiet strength. She enjoyed knitting (mittens for all), sewing, gardening, cooking, animals, especially birds, journaling and teaching.

Helen was predeceased by her husband John in 1995; son, John Jr.; grandson, Christopher Michael Ray; her parents; her brothers, John Day, Liston Day, Charles Day and Raymon Roberts; and her sisters, Virginia Seay and Shirley Jones.

Helen is survived by her brother, Irvin Roberts Jr. of Richmond; her children,  daughter-in-law Mary Ray of West Rutland, Vt., son James and wife Suzanne Ray of Manchester, N.H., son Charles and wife Rosemary Ray of West Hempstead, N.Y., and daughter Kathleen and husband Richard Kershaw of Freedom, Maine; 10 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life service will be held at Philippi Church, Deltaville, on October 6 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Philippi Church, P.O. Box 555, Deltaville, VA 23043, or to any bird or animal organization of your choice.
