Harriett Gardner Mattox
Harriett Gardner Mattox, 91, of Richmond died on Friday, May 31, 2013. She was born to the late Thomas and Hattie Gardner of Littleton , N.C., on December 28, 1921.
Harriett was a member of the National Association of Railway Business Women, and past member of Broaddus Memorial Baptist Church, Monument Heights Baptist Church, and Urbanna Baptist Church. She was a volunteer teacher’s aide at St. Clare Walker Middle School and worked as a clerk with the Department of Agriculture. Her grandfather was the founder of Gardner’s Baptist Church in Macon, N.C.
Harriett was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Carroll Leftwich Martin; her brothers, John M. Gardner and Thomas H Gardner and wife Alma; her sister, Margret “Maggie” Mitchell and husband Otis Cling Mitchell; and nieces, Margret “Peggy” M. Licht and Regina G. Prout.
She is survived by her sons, Carroll Leftwich Martin Jr. and wife Jane of Charles City, and Charles “Chuck” Mattox III and wife Beverly of Martinsburg, W.Va.; stepdaughter, Laura M. Bryant of Crocker; three grandchildren, Carroll Leftwich Martin III and wife Cynthia of Virginia Beach, Charles Thomas Martin of Henrico, and Amy Marie Fary of Crocker; two great-grandchildren, Carroll Leftwich Martin IV and Christopher Clay Martin, both of Virginia Beach; nieces, Linda G Cullinan and children Mike, Brad, and Doug, Pamela P. Mitchell and Patricia M. Jordan, and Donna G. Williams and sons Tom and Rob; nephews, Thomas O Mitchell and John T. Gardner; grandnephews, Thomas Licht and Peter Prout; and grandniece, Maggie Carson.
There will be a graveside service on Wednesday, June 5, at 11 a.m. at Oakwood cemetery. Services by Woody Funeral Home, 1771 N. Parham Rd., Richmond.
