Edward J. Sutherlin
Edward James Sutherlin (“Pee Wee,” “Skipper”) was born to the late Mary A. Sutherlin in Locust Hill on August 1, 1943. He was reared by his grandparents, James and Martha Ann Sutherlin. He departed this life December 23, 2009 at his residence in Locust Hill.

He was educated in the schools of Middlesex County including Mill Road Elementary and St. Clare Walker High School from which he graduated 1966. While in high school, he worked at Christchurch School under the leadership of Joe Cameron. He was later employed by Newport News Shipbuilding & DD Co. and retired in February 2009 after 35 years of service.

Mr. Sutherlin was converted at an early age at Calvary Baptist Church where he served on the Usher Board and in many other areas.

On August 25, 1984 he married Maria Sutherlin and they celebrated their 25th anniversary this past August.

Mr. Sutherlin enjoyed drawing, growing roses, building model cars and boats.

Survivors include his loving wife, Maria Sutherlin; one devoted daughter, Kimberly Zeigler (Bobby) of Ocala, Florida; five god-daughters, Shednita, Rayoni, Trina, Meloniei and Giovanna; eight grandchildren; mother-in-law, Joan Williams; one sister, Karen Reed (Elliott); two sisters-in-law, Rosalind Jackson and Jewel Rayal (Alonza) of Richmond; brothers-in-law, Shelly Williams (Letice) of Jacksonville, Florida, Ray Williams (Kathy) and Burnell Bey of Richmond, and Wayne Thomas; special aunt, Frances Wormley (Bender); aunts, Ruth Sutherlin and Hattie Sutherlin; uncle, George Sutherlin (Audrey); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many special friends.

The funeral service was held January 2 at Calvary Baptist Church. Interment was in the church cemetery.
