Dr. George R. Jarrell
George Robert Jarrell, husband, teacher and lovable shepherd, passed away June 4, 2014, having shared the joy of living with his wife Nancy Morgan Jarrell. He was born March 3, 1926 in Tampa, Fla. After living in Charleston, S.C., they moved to Richmond during his career, and then retired to Kilmarnock. He is also survived by sisters Mary Round of Augusta, Ga., and Vera Kolpin of Tampa, Fla.
A proud WWII veteran of the US Army Air Corps, he served as a B17 gunnery instructor. Dr. Jarrell was a well-educated but unpretentious man who received his BSE and MS from the University of Florida. He received his PhD from the University of South Carolina. His love of teaching led him to Virginia Commonwealth University as Professor and Assistant Dean in the Department of Rehabilitation Counseling. He retired in 1993 and was awarded the title of Professor Emeritus. He continued to work as a Vocational Expert with the Office of Hearings and Appeals for Social Security Disability hearings until 2000.
As Master Mason and Scottish Rite with 54 years service, he was a member of Lancaster Union Lodge in Kilmarnock.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 10, at Currie Funeral Home, 116 E. Church Street, Kilmarnock. Friends are invited to gather at Indian Creek Country Club in Kilmarnock after the service.
