Charles S. Ylonen

Charles S. “Chuck” Ylonen, 80, of Hartfield, formerly of Providence Forge, president and owner of Chuck’s Supermarkets, passed away April 6, 2009.

He was preceded in death by his first wife of 35 years, Pearl G. Ylonen; and his daughter, Susan Ylonen Taylor.

He is survived by his wife, Jean King Ylonen; three daughters, Karen Brannen and her husband, Jack Brannen, Katheryn Barnes and her husband, Dr. William Barnes, and Janet Fitrer and her husband, Dr. Harold Fitrer; and seven grandchildren, John, Amy, Adrienne, Matthew, Katheryn, Laura and Michael.

Mr. Ylonen was co-founder of the YMCA in Sandston and Middlesex, co-founder of the Henrico Fire and Rescue Squad, and co-founder of the Colonial Bank, now known as Citizens and Farmers Bank.

He was a member and past district governor of Rotary International, member of the board of Richfood, past president of the Virginia Food Dealers Association, past director of the National Grocers Association, and a member of Lower United Methodist Church, Hartfield.

He was a Middlesex County Public Library board member and volunteer at its Nearly New Shop.

Mr. Ylonen was a true believer in striving to help his community and fellow man.

Funeral services were held April 8 at Woody Funeral Home in Richmond. Interment was private.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the Lower United Methodist Church or the Middlesex YMCA.
