Charles E. Payne Jr.
Charles Everette Payne Jr. of King William County passed away in a Mechanicsville hospital on Jan. 14, 2009, just five days short of his 70th birthday.
Mr. Payne was born in Hartfield and graduated from Middlesex High School in 1957. He attended Richmond Professional Institute (now Virginia Commonwealth University) throughout his senior year and majored in business administration.
Payne was predeceased by his father, Charles Everette Payne Sr. in 1985.
He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Dorothy Amanda Ailsworth Payne of Tappahannock; two sons, Charles Everette Payne III, and David Warren Payne; a daughter, Lisa; numerous grandchildren; and his younger brother, William Ronald Payne of Urbanna.
Mr. Payne was married to the former Faye Butler Pierce of Urbanna from 1962 until 1974. His second marriage was to Kathleen Fugate Daniel of Mechanicsville.
Mr. Payne excelled in business as a State Farm Insurance agent in Kilmarnock in the early 1960s and later became a real estate agent for J&R Realty in Mechanicsville during the 1970s, before moving into automobile sales full time with Whitten Brothers in Richmond, and later with Capitol Lincoln Mercury in 1986.
In the early 1990s, Mr. Payne went into business for himself, creating Charlie Payne’s Car Store, which operated on Broad Street in Richmond and in Caroline County.
He was diagnosed with cancer in 1998 and he courageously fought this disease until the end, driving himself to his high school class reunion in 2008.
He is fondly remembered for his love of baseball, exotic automobiles and anything to do with Roy Rogers.
A memorial service for Mr. Payne is pending until the spring.
