Alfred L. West

Alfred Leroy West went to be with the Lord on Monday, December 9, 2013 at Riverside Walter Reed Hospital, Gloucester. He was born on September 6, 1927 to Clara Carter Fields. Alfred was a faithful member of Grafton Baptist Church.

In his early years, he attended Syringa Grade School. He was interested in many endeavors that resulted in a variety of skills, including commercial fishing, welding, mechanics, metal recycling, collecting classic cars, and CDL training, and he farmed religiously. He married his childhood sweetheart, Carstella Wake, on May 27, 1947. Alfred retired from M&G Transportation Company in Gloucester in 1995. He also served in the U.S. Army during WWII.

Alfred was preceded in death by his mother, Clara Carter Fields; brothers, Edward Carter and Ronald Carter; and sons, Paul Andrew and Ryland Alexander.

He leaves to treasure his memory his wife of 66 years, Carstella; two sons, Larry (Michele) of Centreville, and Karl (Marion) of Uden, The Netherlands; three daughters, Lois West of Wake, Nancy West of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, and Kay Fleming (George) of Jacksonville, Florida; three brothers, Lloyd Carter (Barbara), Eli Carter (Sarah) of Trenton, New Jersey, and Vincent Carter (Hazel) of Christchurch; four sisters, Loretta Wimbush of Trenton, New Jersey, Rosa D. Keele (Rudy) and Shirley Scott of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Phyllis Carter of Christchurch; one brother-in-law, Alvin P. Wake of Wake; four sisters-in-law, Ella Burke of Wake, Emma Douglas (Luther) of Wake, Ann Leggett of Oxon Hill, Maryland, and Julia Johnson of Bowie, Maryland; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

The funeral service was held Saturday, December 14, at Grafton Baptist Church, Hartfield. Interment was in the Alfred L. West Cemetery, Wake.
