Lester E. Harris Jr.
Lester E. Harris Jr., 89, died suddenly at home in King and Queen on February 1, 2012. He was born June 4, 1922 in Washington, D.C., to Irene and Lester E. Harris.
An Army medic in the South Pacific during World War II, he came home with the idea of becoming a medical doctor. But, the pull of his love for nature was too strong. And so, after graduating from Washington Missionary College in Takoma Park, Md., he worked the rest of his life as a biology professor, including several years at Middlesex High School.
Lester was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Marjorie. He is survived by his children, Lester, “Jay” III, Deborah, Charles and Julia, as well as his brother Richard, many family and friends, and the hundreds of “kids” he taught over the years.
He was a member of the Kilmarnock Seventh-Day Adventist Church. He spent his life loving God and the natural world that God created. And, he spent his career instilling that love in his students.
There will be a memorial service on March 18 at 1 p.m. at Kilmarnock Seventh-Day Adventist Church on 401 South Main St., Kilmarnock. For any inquiries, call Julia Harris at 804-824-8352.
