George J. Blevins
imageGeorge J. Blevins of Hartfield, died peacefully in his home with family by his side. He was born July 11, 1922 in Big Stone Gap. He was a member of Lower United Methodist Church, Norview Masonic Lodge and the Fleet Reserve. George was a Navy veteran of WWII and was a Japanese POW captured on Corregidor.

Betty S. Gray
Betty S. Gray, 79, of Urbanna, formerly of Richmond, passed away Thursday, September 1, 2011. She is survived by her son, William J. Bannister III of Atlanta, Ga.; her brothers, Larry Schwartz of Covington, La., and J. Eddie Schwartz of Burlington, N.C.; her sisters, Katherine Williams of St. Mtn., Ga., Barbara Eubank of Urbanna, Mildred Bohlmann of Port Royal, and Sandra McLamb of Richmond.

Edward Nelson Sr.
Edward Tucker Nelson Sr., 78, of Saluda, died September 1, 2011 from complications of Alzheimer’s. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, was former owner of Nelson’s Citgo Gas Station in Hampton, and retired from Empire Sales as superintendent.

Irving L. Burrell
Irving Lenwood “Dee Shy” Burrell, 93, of Syringa, passed away Wednesday, August 31, 2011, at his home. He is survived by his wife, Rosaline Burrell; a daughter, Patricia Pleasants of Hampton; three sons, Kevin, Rydell and Berkley, all of Middlesex; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Minnie B. Hodges
On Sunday, September 4, 2011, Mrs. Minnie B. Hodges of Saluda departed this life when she was called to her eternal resting place by the Great and Almighty Creator. She was born Minnie Odessa Braxton from the union of the late George E. Braxton and Elizabeth Key Braxton of Middlesex County on July 6, 1922.
