Urbanna mayor candidate charged with election fraud

Janet S. Smith was arrested on Tuesday, October 2, and charged with a felony for filing “false statements” on an election candidate form.

The arrest warrant states that on June 12, 2012 Smith made “a false material statement” that “constitutes the crime of election fraud.”

Smith is on the Town of Urbanna election ballot for mayor. The election date is November 6. Current mayor Don Richwine is seeking re-election on the ballot and is opposed by Smith.

Smith declined to comment, but indicated the investigator questioned whether she met the candidate requirement to be a town resident for one year prior to election day.

The arrest warrant indicates the charges were filed by Virginia State Police special agent Jennifer S. Brown.

Smith was released on a $500 bond on Tuesday.
