Urbanna Christmas Parade is Friday

The public is invited to attend the annual Urbanna Hometown Christmas Parade on Friday, December 7.

The parade concession stand opens at 4:30 p.m. at the Urbanna Firehouse. Food for sale includes hamburgers, firehouse hot dogs, homemade barbecue with slaw, French fries, funnel cakes, hot chocolate, and other beverages. Food sales benefit the Middlesex Volunteer Fire Department (MVFD) Woman’s Auxiliary and the MVFD.

The Hermitage Baptist Church Choir will be singing from 6:15 p.m. until parade time at R.S.  Bristow Store.  Parade-goers can join in the singing of Christmas carols. Wayne Jessie will be the emcee.

Entertainment at the firehouse with emcee Tom Davis will be provided by a local group from Urbanna United Methodist Church, “Jubal,” with Pastor Hyung Moon as the featured singer.

At 7 p.m. at the firehouse and Bristow’s Store the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag will be recited and the National Anthem will be sung.

Urbanna Mayor Don Richwine will then cut the ribbon and the parade will begin.

This year the parade will honor the five branches of the U.S. Military as grand marshals. A representative of each branch will ride in the parade as the town’s  honored guests. There will be a brief ceremony in front of the judges stand in front of the firehouse, and also when the parade arrives in front of R.S. Bristow Store.

“It will be so nice to have our military  and their families with us on December 7—the 71st anniversary of the day the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor in World War II,” said parade chair Lois Jean Brooks.
After the parade, judges’ awards will be presented at the firehouse. All parade participants should come back to the firehouse to hear the results.

Santa Claus will be at the firehouse after the parade to greet all the children and hear their wishes. There also will be a free Santa Party for the children, a beautiful train display by Gary Thimsen, and a surprise visitor to help entertain  the children.

Urbanna Oyster Festival Queen Miss Allison Payne and Little Miss Spat Bailey Fairheart will assist Santa and Mrs. Claus.

The parade will be held rain or shine.

The parade will line up at the site where Urbanna Lumber Co. once stood (Bons Secour building). The parade will proceed down Virginia Street, turn left onto Cross Street, turn left onto Marston Ave., left on Rappahannock, right on Bonner Street, left on Grace Street, and back to where the parade started.

This event is sponsored by The Town of Urbanna and the Woman’s Auxiliary of the MVFD.
