‘Unity World Festival’ is Saturday on Urbanna Firehouse grounds

by Larry Chowning

This Saturday, July 30, The Middlesex County Literary Union and the Middlesex Ministerial Association, in conjunction with 32 community churches, will sponsor a “Unity World Festival” on the grounds of the Middlesex Volunteer Fire Department in Urbanna.

The purpose of the event, which will be from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., is to “bridge the gap” between churches and the community-at-large, said festival coordinator Lou Belcher. It is free and open to the public.

Festival highlights include music of all types but with an emphasis on gospel music. Several local church choirs and well-known local gospel singer George Robinson from First Baptist Church of Amburg will be among those performing.

There also will be food vendors, healthcare programs, recreation for children (such as face painting), youth and teen activities, senior-citizen programs and vendor participation from local businesses and tourism groups. Various other forms of entertainment on the fire department stage will occur throughout the day.

Belcher said that he hopes this event will grow into an annual festival used to encourage diversity, economic development and provide the community with an opportunity to meet the different church families and spread the word of the role of churches throughout Middlesex County.

Participants in this year’s festival are: United Methodist Women (Martha’s Circle) from Lower United Methodist Church (LUMC), bake sale; Respite Care Program from Lower UMC, arts and crafts; Nash Art, paintings; Van A. Thomas; Pleasantly Glamorous, women’s attire; Elk Moon, jewelry; Immanuel Baptist Church, baked goods; Christ Church, bottled water; Books by Pinkie Holmes; and Rere’s Home Cooking, food truck.
