‘Tourism’ meeting is Monday
by Tom Chillemi
Representatives from the Virginia Tourism Corporation (VTC) will be in Urbanna on Monday, October 1, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. to discuss ways of promoting Middlesex as a tourist destination.
Judy Watkins of the VTC said the Middle Peninsula and Northern Neck are “authentic Virginia . . . “These small towns are what tourists are looking for today.”
Watkins made this remarked when she addressed the Middlesex Industrial Development Authority (IDA) on September 20. She told the IDA that VTC marketing grants are available, but require that at least three entities combine promotion efforts.
Recently, three organizations in Middlesex submitted separate grant applications to the IDA, which has suggested that a cohesive promotion effort involve the county as one unit.
Watkins also told the IDA how the county could be promoted in the Virginia Travel Guide, and noted the annual tourism summit will be held in Richmond in October.
Monday’s meeting will be a chance for those involved or interested in tourism to gather valuable information, said Urbanna Town Administrator John Bailey.
The meeting will be held in the Chesapeake Inn at 250 Virginia Street in Urbanna. Light refreshments will be served.
