Teamwork nabs burglary suspect

by Tom Chillemi

There is a saying in law enforcement, “The police have to be lucky once, but the bad guys have to be lucky all the time.”

Luck ran out for DeSean Montreae Byrd in the early morning hours of Sunday, December 30, when he was arrested by the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office, reported Major M.E. Sampson. He is charged with six felonies in connection with burglaries in Urbanna and more charges could be pending since the investigation is ongoing.

Since mid-November Urbanna has been plagued with more than a dozen burglaries to businesses.

About two weeks ago, the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office (MSO) developed a surveillance strategy involving all deputies and investigators.

Strategy
The Middlesex Sheriff’s Office (MSO) put together 2 and 4-person surveillance teams that were stationed within the Urbanna town limits. “This was a total team effort involving the entire office including investigators, deputies and school resource officers,” said Major Sampson. “Sheriff’s office personnel worked around the clock.”

Although some break-ins occurred even while the law enforcement teams were deployed, they were able to gather information on a daily basis, said Major Sampson. This helped investigators anticipate where the next break-in might be.
