The SWCB’s meeting public comment policy
February 6 is the deadline to comment on the Saluda wastewater treatment plant being proposed by the Middlesex County Board of Supervisors.
On January 21, more that 100 people attended a Virginia Department of Environmental Quality public hearing on the proposed sewage plant.
The State Water Control Board (SWCB) will make the final decision on the plant’s proposed effluent discharge permit when it meets in March or April in Richmond, said public hearing officer Bob Wayland, a SWCB member. The SWCB only meets four times per year.
The SWCB, comprised of seven citizens appointed by state governors, can modify, approve, or deny the permit application.
Anyone who commented to DEQ will also be able to comment to the SWCB at its meeting, said Wayland, a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency employee of 29 years who lives in White Stone. For more, view a PDF of the SWC Policy.
The SWCB website states the board will “allow others who participated in the prior proceeding (i.e., those who attended the public hearing or commented during the public comment period) up to 3 minutes to exercise their right to respond to the summary of the prior proceeding presented to the board. New information will not be accepted at the board meeting.”
Written comments on the propose wastewater treatment plant will be accepted by the DEQ until Friday, February 6, at 4 p.m. Comments should be sent to Jeremy Kazio, Piedmont Regional Office, 4949-A Cox Road, Glen Allen, VA 23060; e-mail ; fax (804) 527-5106; or phone (804) 527-5044.
