Megan Brockman’s action to help dogs stay cool has gone viral on the internet.

Brockman, a partner in Cafe Mojo in Urbanna, placed a stack of free kiddie pools outside the business with a sign that reads, “If your dog has to be outside . . . please take a pool to help keep them cool—Megan.”

A visitor from Falls Church posted a photo of the pools and sign on the social media site on Monday. By Tuesday afternoon there had been nearly 837,000 views and the story had been voted to the front page of the site.

Brockman said on Tuesday she got the idea after hearing about two outside dogs dying during the extreme heat wave due to lack of water. She said about 30 pools have been placed with the sign and about 20 have been taken.

Her idea of giving away free pools has a wider implication, and social media has helped tell it, said Brockman. The story also was posted on Huffington Post; and WTVR in Richmond broadcast a story, which concluded by saying, “hot dogs” are not on the menu at Cafe Mojo.

“Hopefully, people will be aware of heat stress to animals,” said Brockman. “If this spreads the word, that’s what it’s all about.”
