Response from town council sought

by Tom Chillemi

During the 2018 Urbanna Town Council election forum, many of the candidates said they wanted citizen input on Urbanna’s issues and future.

However, town resident Kristi Anzivino told council during the public comment period at the May 23 town council meeting that results of recent “coffee with council” meetings have been limited.

Anzivino said she has been to two coffee with council events but so far council members have not responded. “Things that I have brought to the table, I have not gotten any response on whatsoever,” she said.

“I know you can’t speak (respond) because there are three of you (at the meeting),” said Anzivino, referring to the fact that, under state law, when three or more members of a governing body meet to discuss public business, that meeting becomes an “official meeting.”

Coffee with council events are held on the first Friday of the month at 9:30 a.m. at the town hall.

Anzivino suggested that fewer council members could attend the informal “coffee with council” meetings, which would allow an open dialogue with the people they represent. “You are going to lose people. I’m not inclined to come any more because I go and I sit and I talk to you all and I don’t hear anything back. And we were told we would have feedback.”

Council holds a public comment period at the beginning of its regular monthly meetings, held on the fourth Thursday of the month at 7 p.m. However, council does not respond to public comments at the meetings. No member of the council responded to Anzivino’s public comments at the May 23 town council meeting.
