Dale Johnson, 9, of Hartfield discovered a piece of Urbanna history this week. Johnson unearthed an Urbanna Coke Bottle while combing the marshes along Jamison Cove.

In 1925, E.W. Chappell started the Coca Cola Bottling Works in Urbanna. Around 1950, a new building was built in town for a new, modernized bottling company that served five counties. Johnson’s bottle came from that plant that closed in the mid-1960s.

The old Coke plant was refurbished into a motel-restaurant named the Vacationer—what is known today as the Urbanna Inn in the center of town on Virginia Street.
