Proposed jail budget cut
by Tom Chillemi
The board of the Middle Peninsula Regional Jail Authority has reduced its budget for the fiscal year 2013-14 (FY14), which begins July 1.
The FY14 budget is $6.45 million, which is about $108,000 less than the $6.56 million current FY13 budget.
Middle Peninsula Regional Jail Authority serves the counties of Middlesex, Mathews, King and Queen, King William, and Essex. The regional jail is located in Saluda behind the Middlesex County Courthouse.
Earlier this year, a FY14 budget of $6.63 million was proposed—a $71,000 increase over the current budget. However, the amount of some line items have been trimmed and five employee positions were eliminated. The board eliminated three full-time positions that include a trainer, a maintenance worker, and a security officer. In addition, two part-time security positions were cut.
