‘Operation Summer Heat’ caps major investigation

On Monday, July 23, a grand jury of Middlesex County Circuit Court handed down 29 indictments on 11 individuals in relation to drug charges ranging from distribution of heroin to marijuana possession that occurred in Middlesex County, reported Major M.E. Sampson of the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office.

These indictments were part of a nearly year-long investigation by the Tri-River Drug Task Force, which is made up of law enforcement officers of the counties of Middlesex, Mathews, Gloucester, York, and James City along with the cities of Poquoson and Williamsburg and the Virginia State Police.

On July 24 with arrest warrants in hand, the Tri-River Drug Task Force conducted a mass arrest, code named “Operation Summer Heat,” throughout the counties of Middlesex, Gloucester and Mathews, in reference to numerous narcotic distribution and related offenses. The arrests were the culmination of a lengthy multi-jurisdictional investigation that spanned about 12 months.
