No traffic light in front of Food Lion any time soon

by Larry Chowning

There will be no traffic signal installed at the intersection of Route 17 business and Route 17 in front of Food Lion in Saluda, VDOT resident engineer Sean Trapani told Middlesex County supervisors on March 5 during a discussion of the county’s six-year road improvement plan.

Trapani said there is funding in the 2013 VDOT budget for an extensive study and design work to possibly modify the Route 17 intersection, and he anticipates funds in the 2014 VDOT budget to do the actual work at the intersection.

During a preliminary engineering study it was determined that a signal at the Route 17 intersection does not meet “federal warrants for a signal installation,” said Trapani. “It is also felt that a signal in this location would provide a false sense of security to motorists at the intersection. The area is mostly rural and [Route] 17 traffic would not expect a signal to be present.”
