New restaurant coming to Urbanna

by Tom Chillemi

Urbanna will have a new restaurant by October 1, Jason Elmer told the Urbanna Town Council on August 27 during a public hearing on his special use permit application to open Rok-Fish Grill at 240 Virginia Street, opposite the ABC Store. The building previously housed Cafe Mojo for several years, and most recently Bay Catch Seafood.

Elmer said long range plans call for a micro-brewery to be built in the building behind the restaurant. He is seeking investors and an experienced company to build and operate the brewery, which would be called Chesapeake Bay Brewing Company LLC.

All restaurants in Urbanna’s B-1 District operate under a special use permit (SUP). Bottling plants and facilities are allowed with a SUP.

The town council placed 11 conditions on the SUP for the restaurant micro-brewery. Ten of the conditions are standard. A specific condition added requires the brewery operator to furnish a contract for disposal of spent grain and brewing byproducts.

Elmer said the spent brewery grains can be sold to farmers and bakeries.

Council’s action followed a public hearing at which no members of the public spoke.
