A candle on a nightstand may have caused a fire that destroyed a mobile home at the Meadows Trailer Court in Hartfield on Thursday, April 4.

Firefighters from the Hartfield Volunteer Fire Department responded to the fire about 10 a.m., said HVFD Chief Alan Blake.

The fire burned two rooms, and the dwelling was a total loss.

The Virginia State Police was called to investigate the cause of the fire.

The River Counties Chapter of the American Red Cross assisted the two victims who lost their dwelling.

To support disasters such as house fires, please send contributions to American Red Cross River Counties Chapter, P.O. Box 1151, Kilmarnock, VA 22482.

The Lower Middlesex Volunteer Fire Department from Deltaville responded as back-up, as did the Middlesex County Volunteer Rescue Squad of Deltaville.
