Middlesex Museum to honor Chowning

Larry S. Chowning, local historian and journalist, will be awarded the 2018 Preservation Award by the Middlesex County Museum & Historical Society at its annual meeting on Sunday, October 21, at 3 p.m. in the Middlesex County Historic Courthouse in Saluda.

The Preservation Award honors and recognizes individuals, institutions, nonprofit or corporate entities that have made a significant contribution to the public understanding of Middlesex County history through teaching, writing, research, historic preservation, conservation or service. Chowning was selected as the 2018 Preservation Award recipient to honor his years of collecting, researching, documenting and writing about the 350-year-old history of Middlesex County. His contributions make history relevant to the individual lives of ordinary people and make the past more meaningful to all.

Chowning is the author of numerous books about local history such as “Barcat Skipper,” “Images of America, Urbanna ” and “Signatures in Time.” His well-thought words are shared weekly in the Southside Sentinel, the local paper of Middlesex County.

The public is invited to help the Middlesex Museum recognize Larry Chowning for his tremendous contributions to the preservation of our history. A reception will follow at the museum visitor center.
