Lani Ashberry, 8th grade language arts plus and civics/economics teacher at St. Clare Walker Middle (SCW) School, recently received the 2018 National University System/Sanford Teacher Award for the state of Virginia.

The Sanford Teacher Award Program of San Diego, California, recognizes the top 51 PreK-12 aspiring teachers in the nation; gives $50,000 for one selected winner; and $10,000 to 51 teachers, one in each of the 50 states and District of Columbia. Ashberry has received a $10,000 award for her Virginia honor and is eligible for the top teacher $50,000 award that will be announced this year.

In a letter to Ashberry announcing her selection as the top teacher in Virginia, it was stated that the goal was to “honor teachers who consistently demonstrate enthusiasm for teaching; show empathy and warmth toward all students; foster positive relationships with all students; create positive learning environments; and teachers who recognize student strengths.”

Sanford Programs Executive Director Scott Page wrote, “It’s exciting to be making this announcement . . . as it’s a way to give back to teachers like you (Ashberry) who gives so much of your time, dedication, and energy to our communities.”
