Local election candidates take center stage Thurs.

“Candidate Night” in Middlesex County will be held Thursday, October 20, at 7 p.m. in the auditorium of St. Clare Walker Middle School on Route 33 at Locust Hill. The public is invited to attend.

The forum is sponsored by the Deltaville Community Association and Middlesex Forward. The moderator will be Rev. Chauncey Mann Jr.

Questions prepared by a committee and not known to the candidates before the forum, will be asked of candidates who are running opposed in the November 8 Middlesex County election. Each candidate will be given two minutes to respond.

All candidates from each of Middlesex County’s five newly-formed districts as well as candidates for constitutional officers have been invited.

Refreshments will be served in the lobby at the end of the forum.

After the forum, the candidates will be available in the lobby to talk with attendees and respond to any additional questions or concerns.

Candidates running for office unopposed will be introduced at about 7:10 p.m. They include three constitutional officers—Commonwealth’s Attorney Michael T. Hurd, Commissioner of the Revenue P.J. “Bonnie” Davenport, and Treasurer Betty S. Bray,

Also unopposed are two school board candidates, incumbent Elliott W. Reed of the Jamaica District and James W. Goforth of Hartfield District.

Running unopposed for Soil and Water Conservation Directors are Jason R. Bray and Alan T. Sutherlin

At about 7:25 p.m., candidates running for office opposed will be introduced, and each will be given two minutes to address the audience.

They include William B. “Bill” Bess and Claudia Hall Soucek, school board candidates for Harmony Village District.

Board of Supervisors members who are being opposed include Jamaica District incumbent Wayne H. Jessie Sr. and challenger Garey L. Conrad.

Incumbent supervisor John D. “Jack” Miller, Jr. is being challenged by two write-in candidates, Dan Downs and Robert Crump, in Harmony Village District.

Incumbent Fred S. Crittenden is being challenged by Elizabeth B. “Beth” Hurd for the Pinetop District seat on the Board of Supervisors.

Incumbent Middlesex Sheriff Guy L. Abbott is being opposed by David Bushey, R.C. “Chris” Green and George R. Longest.

After the introduction, questions prepared by a committee will be presented to all candidates who are running for office with opposition.
