Let the festival begin!

by Tom Chillemi

Graphic artist Jeremy Glover of Richmond created the 2009 official Urbanna Oyster Festival Poster. It will be available for $15 at the Oyster Festival Foundation booth at Virginia Street and Rappahannock Avenue this Friday and Saturday.
More than 100 vendors, five entertainment stages and two parades equal one fantastic festival—the 52nd Urbanna Oyster Festival this Friday and Saturday, November 6-7.

Oysters fresh from the Rappahannock River will be available again. The bounty that sustained locals for centuries is being dredged just a few miles from Urbanna.

Visitors can sample this succulent delicacy in several ways—served ceremoniously on the half shell, battered and fried in famous fritters, or simmered in stews.

Foods for every taste are also on the menu. The 40-plus food vendors will offer everything from appealing appetizers to decadent desserts.

There’s much to see and do at the Oyster Festival—waterfront activities, a carnival, arts and crafts, shucking contest and the Oyster Festival Queen crowning—to name a few.

Inside this issue of the Sentinel is a special pull-out section to help festival-goers get the most from this two-day celebration.

Come early, stay late. You won’t want to miss a minute of Virginia’s Official Oyster Festival. It only happens once a year, and only in Urbanna.
