A pickup truck and a tractor-trailer collided on Monday, June 12, about 11:30 a.m. at the intersection of Route 17 Bypass and Route 17 Business near Hardee’s in Saluda. According to motorists who had been following the tractor-trailer and witnessed the crash, the tractor-trailer was traveling north on Route 17 Bypass when a pickup truck pulled into its path from the stop sign at Route 17 Business.

The pickup truck’s hood went partly under the trailer and was impacted on the driver’s side front by the trailer’s wheels, said witnesses. The impact wrenched one set of rear wheels completely from the trailer. The tractor-trailer traveled more than 100 yards before coming to rest in the median.

The driver of the pickup truck was conscious at the scene, said the witnesses. He was transported to an area hospital by the Middlesex County Volunteer Rescue Squad, which is headquartered in Deltaville with a station in Hartfield.

The driver of the tractor-trailer appeared uninjured, said the witnesses.

Virginia State Trooper J. K. Morris verified the witnesses’ account and added that the pickup truck driver was sitting up and alert when Trooper Morris talked to him at the hospital.
