Crash results in fatality

The Virginia State Police investigated a single-vehicle accident that resulted in a fatality Monday afternoon, March 25, in Gloucester County.

The accident occurred at approximately 2:35 p.m. in the eastbound lanes of Route 14 (John Clayton Memorial Highway), east of Route 17 (George Washington Memorial Highway).

The driver of a 1998 Ford Explorer, Jiree Dequayne Burrell of Gloucester, was traveling eastbound on Route 14, lost control, ran off the roadway, and overcorrected. The vehicle overturned several times and ejected the passenger who was not wearing a seatbelt. Burrell suffered serious injuries.

The passenger, Tremayne Ryeshawn Safewright of Newport News, was flown to Riverside Regional Medical Center, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Preliminary investigations reveal that speed and alcohol were contributing factors.

The Gloucester County Commonwealth’s Attorney was notified of the fatality.
