Crash claims second life
by Tom Chillemi
A second person has died as a result of a single-vehicle crash that occurred in King and Queen County on January 11.
According to King and Queen Sheriff J. Charboneau, DaVonta Lakeem Scott, 20, of Williamsburg and formerly of Middlesex, was the driver of a 2003 Mitsubishi Diamante that ran off the right side of Route 14 near Little Plymouth. He overcorrected causing the vehicle to run off the left side of the road and flip approximately five times. Both the driver and the front-seat passenger were ejected from the vehicle. Neither was wearing a seat belt.
DaVonta Scott was transported to MCV in Richmond where he remained in a coma. He died Sunday night, said a cousin, who was at his bedside.
His sister, LaTasha Scott, 19, of Williamsburg and formerly of Middlesex, the front-seat passenger, was pronounced dead at Riverside Walter Reed Hospital in Gloucester on the day of the crash, said Sheriff Charboneau.
The other passenger was not seriously injured.
Less than 12 hours after the crash, the Scotts’ cousin, Michael V. Stokes, 54, of Saluda, died when his SUV struck a utility pole on the side of Route 17 near Jamaica, said Sgt. G. Mathias of the Virginia State Police.
On January 16, Cassandra Woods, 20, of King and Queen County died at the scene of a crash in West Point after she was partially ejected from an SUV that overturned, said police.
In all, four local people, who were not wearing seat belts, died in three area crashes between January 11 and January 16.
