Cougar sighted

A cougar has been sighted in the area west of Urbanna.

Three people saw the tan cat, also known as a mountain lion, puma or panther, with its distinctive long tail that curves up at the end, said Barbara Gill of Remlik.

Gill was at her home on LaGrange Creek with Joanna Forrer Worley when they saw the cougar last month. “I saw what I first thought was the head of a huge strange-looking dog come up over the river bank,” said Gill. “It was soon obvious that it was not a dog but a cougar.”

The cougar’s tan body was about 3.5 to 4 feet in length with a long tail that swooped up at the end, Gill said. “It was traveling with a smooth trot-like gait. It topped the bank, walked briefly up stream, and disappeared back over the bank.”
