Calves named town treasurer

The Urbanna Town Council voted unanimously Monday to appoint Bob Calves as town treasurer for the salary of $1 a year. The salary is a formality.

The town code requires the treasurer to receive and disburse money as directed by the town council.

The code also requires checks to be signed by the mayor or chairman of the finance and administration committee and countersigned by the town treasurer.

The town has been without a treasurer since former town administrator and treasurer Lewis Filling Jr. resigned both positions in March, 2011 after he was indicted for embezzling $50,371 from the Central Middlesex Volunteer Rescue Squad of Urbanna during the five years he was its treasurer.

On February 15, Filling was sentenced to 25 years in prison with all but 3.5 years suspended.

Calves, 70, regularly attends and participates as a town citizen in town council and planning committee meetings.

Calves attended MIT and founded a firm that provided trade advertising, technical writing and marketing support to businesses manufacturing data/radio equipment.
