Beth Hurd re-elected school board chair

The Middlesex County School Board re-elected Beth Hurd to her second term as board chairperson at an organizational meeting Monday night. Hurd represents Pinetop District on the board.
Jamaica District school board member Elliott Reed was elected vice chairman, Peggy Jordan was elected clerk, and Heather Lucas was elected deputy clerk.
The board also voted to continue to hold its regular monthly meeting on the second Monday of each month at 7 p.m. in the historic courthouse in Saluda.
Saluda District school board member Dr. Richard Shores was reappointed to the Chesapeake Bay Governor’s School Board.
Reed was reappointed to the Middle Peninsula Regional Special Education Committee and the Syd Thrift Memorial Athletic Fields Committee.
Saluda District board member Lee Walton was appointed to the Bridge and Community Career Technical School Committee.
Newly-elected Pinetop District board member Garland Harrow was appointed to review bills and receipts before each school board meeting.
Other appointments will be made later in the year.
In other matters, the school board:
- Learned that all the schools have had students vaccinated for the H1N1 flu. School superintendent Rusty Fairheart praised the work of Three Rivers Health District, which provided the vaccination service to the schools.
- Learned that school enrollment for the division is at 1,214, which is four students over the earlier enrollment projection of 1,210. As of December 18, Middlesex Elementary School has 529 students, St. Clare Walker Middle School has 267, and Middlesex High School has 410.
