Another successful festival!

by Tom Chillemi

The Oyster Festival faithful were in Urbanna for two days of fun, food and entertainment on Friday and Saturday, November 2-3.

Alyce and Terry Martin of Montross were at the festival for the 20th time. They recalled how they’d brought their first child Caroline to the festival when she was just 5 months old. The folks at the Aylett Country Day School concession heated her bottle in warm water, said Alyce.

In the years since, the Martins have introduced numerous people to the Oyster Festival, which celebrated its 61st year in 2018.

So, are oysters from the Rappahannock River better when roasted or raw? “There is no better,” answered Terry. “They’re all good.”

This was the first time the Martins had attended on a Friday. The morning skies looked threatening and the crowd was thin. However, by 1:45 p.m. it was 72 degrees, partly sunny and the streets were filling.
