AARP tax help available at Deltaville Library
Volunteers working with the AARP Tax-Aide program will be at the Deltaville Library on Thursday, April 2, to assist people with their income tax.
AARP Tax-Aide is a program that provides free tax counseling, preparation and electronic filing for all taxpayers with middle and low income, with special attention to those age 60 and older. There is no age restriction for clients, and clients do not have to be members of AARP. Volunteers are trained and tested each year to provide basic tax preparation services for 1040EZ, 1040A, 1040 (plus a limited number of schedules) and Virginia 760 forms.
For over 20 years, the local group of volunteers has been working in Gloucester, Gloucester Point and Mathews to help people. Many of the clients come to these locations from Middlesex County. At the request of the Deltaville Library, two days were scheduled this year in Deltaville to provide easier access for Middlesex County residents. The next opportunity for help is Thursday, April 2. Appointments between 10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. may be obtained by calling the Deltaville Library at 776-7362.
According to Godwin Jones, a local volunteer, many Middlesex citizens have all the documents required, but need help in understanding and filing. This is a way to get help completing the forms and electronic filing at no cost. Other people, especially young parents with incomes of $5,000 to $40,000, are missing credits they deserve, such as earned income credit and child tax credit. New this year is the deduction for real estate taxes for filers who do not itemize.
Taxpayers should bring the following with them to the tax site: Photo ID, Social Security numbers for all individuals listed on the return, copies of last year’s returns, W-2 forms, Unemployment Compensation Statements, SSA-1099 if paid Social Security benefits, all 1099 forms (1099-INT, 1099-DIV, 1099-MISC, 1099-B plus purchase price of any investment sold during the tax year), 1099R forms if paid a pension or annuity, all forms indicating federal income tax paid, child care provider information and receipts/cancelled checks if itemizing deductions.
New this year, they also need to bring documents showing amount of real property tax paid and the amount of stimulus payment received in 2008. The stimulus payment is not taxable. It was based on 2007 tax return information and if your situation changed, you may be eligible for a stimulus payment or a larger payment as a credit on your 2008 taxes.
Middlesex County residents are also welcome at the other three sites. On every Monday between February 1 through April 15, volunteers are at the Gloucester Library and people may call 693-2998 for an appointment. On Wednesdays, the group is at Bethany United Methodist Church, Gloucester Point, welcoming walk-ins from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and evenings by appointment (642-5269). On Fridays, walk-ins are served from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Mathews Memorial Library.
AARP Tax-Aide is administered by the AARP Foundation in cooperation with the IRS.
