‘Bridge’ leading to town marina is deteriorating
Officially it’s not a “bridge.” However, VDOT has recommended closing or restricting loads on the bridge-like structure that leads to the Urbanna Town Marina at Upton’s Point. VDOT’s underwater inspection of the bridge in August “revealed several critical deficiencies that warrant prompt corrective action.” The town was notified of the problem in mid-December.

Farm Bureau opposes hunting on Sundays
“The Virginia Farm Bureau Federation (VFBF), through its grassroots policy process, opposes hunting on Sunday,” said Wilmer Stoneman, VFBF associate director of governmental relations. “People are trying to couch this as a private property issue, but if it is then you should be able to hunt and fish on private property 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, not just on Sundays.”

Crashes claim three lives
Thousands of lives are shattered in motor vehicle crashes each year. This week three Middlesex County residents, who were not wearing safety belts, died in separate motor vehicle crashes, reported the State Police.

Talks on proposed athletic complex continue
Several years ago, a high school coach suggested that they name the proposed athletic complex at MHS after Syd Thrift, a Middlesex native who served in many administrative roles in Major League baseball. The proposed sports complex was, in part, to honor Thrift for his contributions, but also to encourage contributions from his many associates and others who knew and admired him.

“The dreamer is dead, but his dream still lives” was the theme of the message conveyed by Dr. Marion Tapscott at the annual Middlesex NAACP Breakfast/ Celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday at The Beacon in Topping.
