U.S. Air Force’s John McKone — 50 years later
It was 1960. McKone, 28 at the time, was in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed overseas during the Cold War. He was the pilot of a RB-47 reconnaissance plane. During a routine flight, his plane was struck by the cannons of a Russian MIG. McKone had to eject.

Middlesex to pay retirement of new employees
Following the lead of the Middlesex County School Board, which voted unanimously on June 14 to continue to pay all Virginia Retirement System (VRS) costs for new employees, county supervisors voted 3-2 on June 15 to do the same.

New state laws take effect thursday
Nearly 900 new state laws go into effect on Thursday, July 1, including measures that help display “Old Glory,” secure vehicles being towed, raise the maximum speed limit, provide for aquaculture zones, encourage offshore electricity generation, and much more.

Group effort returns injured bald eagle to the wild
On June 28 in front of an excited group of onlookers a majestic bald eagle was returned to the wild. This adult bald eagle was spotted on June 9 under attack by an osprey on the Severn River near Mobjack Bay. The osprey ultimately drove the eagle into the water.
