Supervisors go after meals tax
The Middlesex County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously Tuesday to start the process of having a referendum for a food and beverage tax placed on the November 2010 ballot.

Over 30 citizens spoke against a proposed 34% real estate tax hike last Thursday at a public hearing on the FY11 Middlesex County budget. The proposed budget totals $19 million; includes a 12-cent increase in the real estate tax rate; and provides no additional local funds for education.

Numerous county residents spoke in favor of providing more local funds to the Middlesex County Public School System last Thursday night in the historic county courtroom at Saluda. The Middlesex County Board of Supervisors has proposed a 12-cent real estate tax hike that will generate about $2.5 million in additional revenue, but none of those funds would go to county schools.

Town of Urbanna voters will go to the polls on Tuesday, May 4, to choose a mayor and six council members. All terms are for two years. Only the mayor’s position is being contested. Two members of town council are running for mayor—Donald B. Richwine and Janet Suzon Smith.
