Open space issue to get further study
Middlesex County currently requires that 30 percent of land in a major subdivision remain in open space. A planning commission proposal in June recommended that 50 percent be required.

Fire consumed the home of Randolph and Gloria Lane on Urbanna Road (Rt. 227) on Tuesday. An adult male and juvenile were home when the fire started about 6 p.m. and escaped unharmed.

The Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is seeking public comments on a proposed sewage treatment plant. The proposed 39,900 gallons-per-day discharge would empty into Urbanna Creek at the head of a cove near Oakes Landing.
