Russell wins state corn yield award
Ronnie Russell of Corbin Hall Farm at Samos has been honored as a state winner in the 2008 National Corn Yield Contest, sponsored by the National Corn Growers Association. Russell placed first in the state in the Ridge Till Irrigated Class with a yield of 251.3 bushels per acre.

The board is still $315,000 short of balancing the proposed budget and will wait until after the public hearing on Tuesday, April 21, to decide how to make up the $315,000 shortfall. Supervisors must decide whether to provide the $315,000 from the county fund balance or make further cuts in the proposed budget.

In response to a 5% budget cut, Middlesex School Superintendent Rusty Fairheart has recommended the elimination of three non-core teaching positions, two support positions, and a central office administrator and support person. The 5% equates to $352,000 in school operating funds that must be cut from the proposed upcoming 2009-10 (FY10) budget.

Proposed is a real estate tax increase of 2 cents, which would raise the rate to 22 cents per $100 of value; and raising the town meals tax and the lodging tax to 5 percent, from its current 4 percent rate.

Most of the comments made by citizens or officials were answered with: “DEQ staff recommends that no change to the proposed permit is necessary in response to these comments.”
The application is for “re-issuance” of a permit issued in December 2003 that expired on December 10, 2008.
