‘Street preaching’ at festival annoying but legal
Under the law, “street preaching” is considered the exercise of free speech and is protected by the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. The subject of street preaching at the Urbanna Oyster Festival came up during the Urbanna Town Council meeting on November 15, and in Letters to the Editor in the Southside Sentinel.

Citizens urge board to keep pond intact and reopen Stormont Road
Developer Gene Ruark has applied to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to create a “compensatory wetland and stream bank” by draining Healy’s Millpond, which is adjacent to Stormont Road and Healy’s Mill Subdivision. The Corps was accepting public comments on the proposal through November 17.

Fun way to learn the SOLs
imageMiddlesex High School senior Leah Therrien has developed an educational board game, which is a hit with educators and fun for students, that incorporates Standards of Learning (SOL). The object of “Butterfly Journey… Where Will It Take You?” is to go home. The more SOL questions players answer correctly, the faster players advance on their journey.

Urbanna to celebrate with parade, tour
If you are looking to get into the Christmas spirit, Urbanna is the place to be this Friday and Saturday, December 3-4. Holiday festivities begin Friday at 4:30 p.m. with food being served at the Urbanna Firehouse. At 6 p.m., the illumination of the Urbanna bridge will take place followed at 6:10 p.m. by the illumination of the Urbanna Memory and Honor Tree on the grounds of the Middlesex Woman’s Club.

Farm Bureau president warns of bay mandates
