State Police searching sheriff’s financial records
Middlesex Sheriff Guy Abbott is being investigated by the Virginia State Police for embezzlement, "embezzlement by officers of public or other funds," and misuse of public assets, according to affidavits for search warrants that were filed in Chesapeake Circuit Court on June 16.

Ninety-three members of the Middlesex High School Class of 2010 will graduate on Saturday, June 19, in the John S. Clements Memorial Gymnasium in Saluda. The ceremony begins at 10 a.m. and admission is by ticket only.

Middlesex County School Board chairman Beth Hurd, on behalf of the school board, made a public apology on Monday to the St. Clare Walker Alumni Association with regard to the apparent trashing of the 1956 and 1957 state basketball trophies won by old St. Clare Walker High School.

After 4 years of legal wrangling and following a 3-hour public hearing Tuesday night, the Middlesex County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to grant a special exception to Middlesex Metals, a junkyard and recycling facility in Remlik, to operate in a Low Density Rural (LDR) zone.

Middlesex Metals' plan to expand was endorsed by the Middlesex Planning Commission on a 7-2 vote Thursday, June 10. The special zoning exception application was sent to the the Middlesex Board of Supervisors for a public hearing, which is scheduled for Tuesday, June 15, at 7:30 p.m. in the historic courthouse at Saluda.
