Living with Black Bears in Virginia
imageTwo black bear sightings have been reported in the White Stone area in recent days, and last week there was a reported sighting in Hartfield. As Black Bear populations in Virginia are on the rise, the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries is stepping up it's effort to educate the public about living with the animals.

Independence Day events begin Friday
imageThe celebration gets started at the Urbanna Town Marina at Upton’s Point on Friday evening at 5 p.m. with food, music, a boat parade and fireworks display (see pages A8-9 for details). The fun continues Saturday at 9 a.m. at the Annual Deltaville Heritage Day with a pet parade, children’s parade, crab races, food, music, centennial display, 2 p.m. general parade and more.

From jailbird to counselor
imageFor 13 years Kennedy Wise of King and Queen County “lost his soul” to drugs and alcohol. Throughout those dark years, Wise was in and out of the Middle Peninsula Regional Security Center in Saluda so much he acquired the jail nickname of “Otis” after the well-known inmate on the Andy Griffith Show.

Town, developer continue to seek settlement
Attorneys for Urbanna and developer Potomac Timber Investments will continue their attempt to negotiate an out-of-court settlement of a $4 million lawsuit regarding proposed condominiums at Urbanna Yachting Center and the appeal of a marina zoning decision.
