Small camera gives sheriff’s office big boost
Through a Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) grant, the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office recently installed a camera in a county police car that records video in front of the vehicle and to the rear, including the back seat.

It could be back to the budget drawing board for school superintendent Rusty Fairheart and the Middlesex County School Board. On March 24, county administrator Charles Culley informed county supervisors that Middlesex faces an $800,000 shortfall in the current 2008-09 (FY09) county budget.

The figures are preliminary, but the Town of Urbanna staff has recommended a 4-cent increase in the town real estate tax rate as well as a $1 increase in water rates for the upcoming 2009-10 (FY10)budget. The preliminary figures were released at the town council’s finance committee work session on March 27.

Even though there are budgetary concerns in Middlesex County, the most recent audit that ended June 30, 2008 (FY08) does not reflect any major financial health problems for the county. Auditors have indicated to Middlesex supervisors that the county is financially sound.
