Voting rights decision made by county in 2007 draws criticism
The Middlesex County Board of Supervisors decision in 2007 to “bail out” of Section 5 of the U.S. Voting Rights Act of 1965 was criticized at a recent board meeting. The National Voting Rights Act was signed to make it illegal to have discriminatory voting practices in all states. This gave the U.S. Justice Department oversight over voting procedures to ensure fairness to all.

Crash claims second life
According to King and Queen Sheriff J. Charboneau, DaVonta Lakeem Scott, 20, of Williamsburg and formerly of Middlesex, was the driver of a 2003 Mitsubishi Diamante that ran off the right side of Route 14 near Little Plymouth. He overcorrected causing the vehicle to run off the left side of the road and flip approximately five times.

‘Bridge’ leading to town marina is deteriorating
imageOfficially it’s not a “bridge.” However, VDOT has recommended closing or restricting loads on the bridge-like structure that leads to the Urbanna Town Marina at Upton’s Point. VDOT’s underwater inspection of the bridge in August “revealed several critical deficiencies that warrant prompt corrective action.” The town was notified of the problem in mid-December.

Farm Bureau opposes hunting on Sundays
“The Virginia Farm Bureau Federation (VFBF), through its grassroots policy process, opposes hunting on Sunday,” said Wilmer Stoneman, VFBF associate director of governmental relations. “People are trying to couch this as a private property issue, but if it is then you should be able to hunt and fish on private property 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, not just on Sundays.”
