County supervisor slams decision to pay bonuses
A decision by two Middlesex County supervisors to vote for approval of “longevity” bonuses for some employees of the Middle Peninsula Planning District Commission (PDC) caused a heated discussion at a county board of supervisors meeting on Tuesday. Crittenden countered, “If we decided in our budget, and it was unanimous, not to give raises to our employees, we should stick to it and not give money to others without giving it to our own.”

A Middlesex Circuit Court grand jury handed down 21 felony charges against 11 people via direct indictments on June 18, 2009, reported Middlesex Sheriff Guy Abbott. The indictments and arrests are the result of a lengthy investigation that is still ongoing, said Sheriff Abbott. Investigators and deputies from the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office worked with the Tri-Rivers Drug Task Force on the cases, he added.

This Friday and Saturday, July 10-11, are good times to skip cooking, relax, and enjoy live music, entertainment and good food—all while raising money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Everyone is invited to Fishing Bay Yacht Club in Deltaville on Friday for live music, crab cakes, liquid refreshment, and both a silent and live auction. There is no admission charge. Tickets for the crab cake dinner that night are $10 each and available at the door.

Two black bear sightings have been reported in the White Stone area in recent days, and last week there was a reported sighting in Hartfield. As Black Bear populations in Virginia are on the rise, the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries is stepping up it's effort to educate the public about living with the animals.
